Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism as an elementary school student. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the home that belonged to a member of jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
